Is the US shuttle program claiming too many lives? Birds think so. In addition to the crew that died aboard the Columbia in 2003, it has come to my attention that they routinely get spattered by the shuttle on takeoff. The recent launch of the Discovery is an excellent example.

Footage also showed the fuel tank's nose cone hit a bird about 2 1/2 seconds after liftoff -- a point at which Discovery was probably still traveling too slowly to sustain any damage, he said.
