Now you can view existing discussion about a news article directly from the front page. Just click on the "View Comments" link to see it.

Note: This will only be available on new news items created after today. Existing news items could be linked to their discussion but that isn't a high priority. I might create a news archive where people can view my old news items from the front page too. Then I might link some of the better discussions manually.

I made a couple of other minor changes too. You can immediately jump to a news entry by clicking "Discuss This". Just log in and you'll be taken directly to the discussion. A count of the number of comments that exist are also displayed in the same section.

On a case by case basis I may choose to publish links to discussions but currently the only ones accessable to anyone without a subscription are the news items. I'd have to individually establish the link that allows it to be viewed externally in the database so I doubt I'll be doing this very much (unless I code in an admin interface to do it for me).

Questions or comments?

I imagine this is going to cut down on the number of people who actually sign in a bit because it'll be easier to just see some of the current discussion by viewing it on the front page, but I'm not too worried.

Oh well. We always have the other sections.

Edited: Post 1000 and all of them gems, woo hoo!!!

A couple more modifications added.

First (and most obvious) I've added cookie-based tracking to supplement the current URL based session tracking. This means that you won't have to log in every time if you don't want.

To completely log out, be sure to click the "clear cookies" link on the front page. Otherwise the next person who uses the computer will be able to log in as you.

If we end up with some security problems, I might modify this to allow only multiple logins in an individual browser session.

I've also added some information to the front page when you're logged in. This includes the number of unread forum mails you've gotten, the latest post and the number of posts since you last logged in. More will probably come with time.

I've still got a few more little tweaks I'd like to make, but I'm also open to suggestions. Is there anything you'd like to see on here?

I think the changes you've made are really fun. Good job.
